Friendly greetings from the Metaverse and Paijat-Hame Edu Island
Paijat-Hame Edu Island administrators have recently received many requests of co-operation. This is wonderful and shows an increasing interest for Second Life and the virtual worlds in general. This concept and new approach to services and people is of great interest also for many
institutions and government bodies.
Eures joined us in October. They have now their own stand on Paijat-Hame Edu Island.
We can find them easily by cliking this SLURL link. (Remember you must have Second Life viewer installed and updated for the link to work).
Two other important institutions with significant impact on working life will soon be with us also on our island.
Under the enthusiasm of our Salpaus students in creating services for their Junior company involved in Tourism , we have decided to purchase an OpenSpace Island which will be linked to Paijat-Hame Edu Island on its west side. The purpose of this is to give room to our students to achieve and carry out their business idea in Second Life. This OpenSpace is 65000 sq meter large and allow 3750 prims on it.
We will build on that new island forests, lakes etc. which will give a taste of Finnish Nature to visitors.
More news to come,
peace

Friendly greetings from Paijat Hame Edu Island
Dear reader,
I am proud to say that the seminar dedicated to Second Life - Virtual World and organised by Koulutuskeskus Salpaus Oct 17 was a success.
A great teamwork to organise and implement it, thanks to all.
75 attended physically the seminar , we had 18 avatars following the morning interventions on our island.
If we add the speakers and the support team, around 120 people assisted this conference.
Hannu Heinonen, vice principal of Salpaus was the Chairman of the seminar. The island Paijat Hame Edu was introduced to the audience by Reijo Pöyhönen, Manager of Education in Salpaus.
We had great speakers from the Finnish Board of Education, University of Applied Sciences of Laurea, University of Joensuu, University of West Scotland and the company Languagelab.com from London selling English tuition in Second Life.
In the afternoon, 3 panelists from Lahti University of Applied Sciences and Salpaus discussed on Entrepreneurship and interacted with the audience.
Great news also from the sea this week!
Three Finnish islands joined forces to shape the first Finnish virtual archipielago ever...!
Paijat Hame Edu Island joined Edufinland Oct 21 and the University of Joensuu Island joined us Oct 22.
All the best,
Jorgito

A new world for our students - Facing new challenges
Friendly greetings from the Metaverse!
Our students made their first steps in the Metaverse i.e Second Life last week under the supervision of their teachers.
A fascinating new world for them if I refer to their first comments which can be seen at
http://slhyvayritys.blogspot.com/
Time has been given to them in order to get acquainted to this new dimension, for them to get the suitable clothes, hair... but not only. They got acquainted to various places in Second Life and started chatting with other residents.
Now our enthuastic students will be taken to think about trading in Second Life.
Particular emphasis will be given to market study and what kind of ideas could be implemented.
Technical support has been provided to students and teachers as the platform of the SL viewer can be challenging for non IT experts.
As well marketing tips have been given on how to start business trading in the virtual world and what can be done in terms of advertising free of charge in SL.
I will endeaviour to write Marketing tips in Second Life in the next future as there is obviously a need for that.
I introduced the Second Study project in an International Seminar held in Helsinki Oct 1, 2008 "Grasping the Future".
Second Life is one of the tools which could be used during the course of the project among teachers of the upper secondary and vocational schools of Päijät-Häme Region.
I used that medium to show ppt slides about the project. From the few comments reported to me afterwards, this new kind of presentation "In-World" was highly appreciated, innovative and different.
All the best,
Jorgito Arado

News from Second Study and HyväYritys projects
hello,
Building all facilities on our Paijat-Hame Edu Island in Second Life has taken a lot of our time but it seems that we are now ready to implement the objectives of Hyväyritys project i.e. setting a place for our students to develop trade in this new virtual environment, which will be part of their Entrepreneurship studies.
2 pilot groups have been chosen by Salpaus teachers.
One group will start getting acquainted to Second Life October 2nd and the other group will start in December 2008.
Their scope of activities will be tourism and everything related to this branch.
6 teachers will be supervising their work and a technical team will be set up to attend them. This team will comprise of our two builders who helped us all along this summer. I will take part in that team as well.
Our two builders Epi and Jrs. Metall will work for CEC, a cooperative set up by Lahden ammattikorkeakoulu students. This cooperative will then invoice Salpaus for their work in our island.
Everything has to be thought in a different way, marketing, logistics, accounting etc. therefore documentation and following up will be crucial. We will put in place two kind of tools to carry out that task, blogs and Wikis.
WordPress technology will be used for our blog and Wiki Confluence for our Wiki.
Second Study
Second Life will be a very small part of all the tools used to implement the objectives of this project. The age limit and the technical requirements in terms of hardware are the main reasons for that.
Teachers and students/purples from the higher secondary and vocational education will use Web 2.0 tools, social media environments, blogs, wikis, etc.
Teachers have set up 8 different groups. More information on those groups can be founded at
http://ellu.phkk.fi/file.php/1464/Ritvan/Second_Study_pilottiryh_taulukko.doc .
Follow-up forms have been built both for teachers and students/purples.
Another great news!
Salpaus Further Education is organising a seminar dedicated to "Pedagogy in virtual worlds" whose focus will be Second Life - virtual world.
The seminar will be held in Lahti, Finland on October 17th.

Take a deep breath
Summer holidays are at the door, and everything is going well under Second Life sun.
Päijät-Häme Edu Island is still under construction but already looking good.
Our two builders under the supervision of Second Study and HyväYritys project leader have built the main faciltiies i.e Salpaus, LUAS, company and high schools buildings.
Sibeliustalo has expressed the wish to be also present on the island.
Second Study
The last meeting of the workgroup was held on 3 June. One pilot group has already started at Hollola Lukio. The principal teaches Integral Calculation using Web 2.0 tools.
We expect to have 3 more groups in August 1 vocational and 2 more groups in High Schools.
We are have also technical meetings with our Computer Department on our to organise the prototype website comprising of all Web 2.0 tools which will be used by whether the Secondary and vocational Education.
There are some technical requirements to keep in mind when building such a proto/website.
Video websites such a YouTube need for instance a whole dedicated server due to the need of bandwidth to run videos.
HyväYritys
A info meeting was organised on 27 May for all Entrepreneurship students who will take part in the Second Life adventure in October 2008.
Two groups have been chosen by two Entrepreneurship teachers of Salpaus Further Education.

Second Study and HyväYritys projects on good tracks!
The two projects Second Study and HyväYritys are indeed on good tracks.
Second Study workgroup started working on April 24.4. The group comprises of 5 members and is lead by Ritva Kivijärvi.
Ritva suggested that a survey could be organized in order to assess the expertise on Web 2.0 tools among teachers and principals of all institutions involved in this project. That feedback could be a good base for our first report to be sent to the National Board of Education by May 30th. The suggestion was received favorably. Ritva will build it using Webropol platform.
As the main goal of the project is to create a virtual and social platform where Web 2.0 tools would be used for Education purposes and given also the plethora of such tools, another task for the workgroup members will be to focus on a shortlist of blogs, wikis, photo galleries, video websites, podcasts etc. we could set up on that platform. Each member of the workgroup will have to analyze the pros and cons of one category of tools, blogs being one category, wikis being another one etc. The result of this enquiry will determine which tools will be used on this Second Study platform.
HyväYritys workgroup started working on April 11.4. The workgroup comprises of 4 members, all Salpaus Staff and is lead by Georges Segura. Olavi Virtanen, member of this workgroup and Entrepreneurship teacher suggested a pilot group in the sector of Tourism. One of the goal of the project is to bring into Second Life different pilot groups from different sectors of activities. We felt Olavi's proposal was excellent and the workgroup validated it. Second Life environment is still new for many teachers as well as for students, we also decided to organize an information meeting for teachers and students at the end of May 2008. Second Life brings new challenges for Entrepreneurship Education and one of the task of the workgroup will be to analyze those: for instance how to build a business plan in Second Life or how to organize a good and efficient Service to Customer in this environment. One of the biggest challenge will be to put in place and carry out new learning processes suitable for that new environment without forgetting that these new learning processes will serve and help students carry out their business ideas in the real life too.
At the same time, Salpaus Further Education Areena Board (a Branch of Salpaus Further Education) has decided to start building the "Virtual Salpaus Areena" in Second Life. Salpaus Areena comprises of 20 different geographical addresses and the purpose would be to give all potential visitors or students an opportunity to get acquainted to all Areena's services and courses/trainings in one place but moreover introduce the whole Institution Salpaus Further Education.
In order to achieve that objective, we decided to purchase an Education Island in Second Life. The choice of an island was determined by the fact that Salpaus Further Education would get full control on that place rather than renting a place somewhere else in Second Life.
Salpaus Further Education Island in Second Life was delivered one week ago but its access is still strictly restricted as it is under construction. Salpaus Further Education decided to hire two students for three months. Their work will be to build all facilities needed for the above stated purpose under the supervision of Salpaus Further Education Areena Board.
We have set up a building workgroup and intend to co-operate with Lahti University of Applied Sciences. They have decided to build their own place and be tenants on Salpaus Further Education Island.
The building group first task is to "urbanize" the island and parcelling it up in between all actors i.e. Salpaus Further Education, Lahti University of Applied Sciences, private companies working with Salpaus Further Education and representatives of the Upper Secondary Education of the Region of Päijät-Häme.
A place will be naturally dedicated to Second Study and HyväYritys projects.
